A Bat to the Heart

-- Pleasant Surprise --

It was to a strange and repetitive shuffling noise you heard from underneath your bed and around the room which caused you to wake up. it was still a little dark, and freezing. You didn't want to leave the comfort of your bed. Your best friend, how could you betray the covers which you had grown up with and they had protected you from the evil frost, it would only be polite to stay in bed after all. Until it kept you up and you angrily peered out of bed to notice Scout was causing the noise. You groaned. "S-Scouuuut?" You said, but creating a slur in his name as you were still somewhat tired. "Oh, hi ____." Said the Scout, taking his time to finish what he was doing then turning to look at you, a smug smile on his face. "I got somethin' you might like, stay here." And he left the room before you could question him. Hmm, what would be so important he would wake up early to show you? You weren't allowed to bring your own phone, and he appeared to have no clock in the room so there was no way you could know the time. You looked out the window and the sun hadn't begun to rise, judging by this you would say it was somewhere around five-ish. Oh ok f- FIVE WHAT!? WHY had he bothered to get up THAT early, I mean COME ON, even an early riser such as your mother stays away from this dreaded hour. It had been about five to ten minutes before you heard him come through the door with a nice smell. It was pleasant.. And foody..? You rose your finger up to question him, but he pulled a play into your site, judging by the fact that there wasn't much variety of food, he had done a good job preparing for you. He layed out a full "English Breakfast", and judging by hat fact he was American you took this as a sign of respect to you. Uh, this was amazing from your point. "OHMYGOSH Thank you!" You smiled and you climbed down from your bed and took the plate, You placed it on your desk to evaluate and even your mum didn't make it as good as this. Wait, and Scout didn't appear to be a good cook so.. you could tell he put amazing effort into making this near to perfect for you. You did the signature squee and hugged him. You expected him to be stiff again, and maybe slightly loose. One thing was true, he was slightly surprised but then returned the hug affectionately. This was strange, why did he- ohh maybe it was because he was in front of his friends before but now there was nothing to be embarrassed about he could express himself. You didn't let go, neither did he. You were enjoying it as much as he was for once. Until you let go, and he followed by letting go. "Thanks Scout." "Oh, it was nuthin'." He replied, emitting that light blush again. You pretended not to notice to see if he would keep it there or try not to cover it. He even put take this for me?" He widened his eyes and a blank expression returned to his face, as if he wasn't prepared to answer that question and hoped that you wouldn't ask it. "Why don't you just enjoy it already and I'll answer after."
he knife and fork in the polite way that everyone did back at home. Ohh this was so sweet of him. "Can I ask.. why you went out of your way to m

-- Answer --

After you had finished, you put your knife and fork in the middle of the plate and straightened them. "Thanks again for that Scout." You said, as he smiled as a reply. "So, now I'm finished, you'll tell me why?" You proceeded to insist on asking. "Uhh, well uh.." He seriously had tried to make you forget, it seemed. "Yes?" "Uhm.. Y'know, as a welcoming?" "Why are you questioning it? Or are you not sure? Because, I've never seen anyone welcome me this early with that effort." He went silent again, this time he was more red in the cheeks. "Because well I... Y'know.. No I.. Nevermind..." He walked out of the room red in the face. You sat there, tapping your plate wondering what the heck just happened. "Ok then.." You said, a little hurt as if you really wanted to know why. Because you did. Now, whilst you're not really naive, you were being at the moment. At least, for now. His little act of kindness made you really start thinking.  As your head tilts you begun to draw again, then an idea hit you before you widened your eyes as the spy knocked on your door. Well, you didn't know it was spy until you turned around. "_____, can I have a small chat with you please?" He asked politely. "Oh.. Sure Spy, what is it?" You turned your full attention to him as he dragged `Scout's chair to face you. "I need to speak to you about Scout. Now, whilst you may think 'e is a little self-concentrated and braggy, a show off et cetera, zhis is just an act he puts on to... impress ozhers to make 'im seem more big as 'e is the youngest and 'e used to be picked on when 'e was a young boy." You widened your eyes, poor Scout. "Oh, that's terrible.." "Oui, it is truly terrible (he said it like terrabluh). But you must understand, 'e means well. 'E really does. And do not judge 'im, 'e is very close to me, weazher 'e knows it or not, but just try to look underneath the outside and more on what 'e really means, oui?" "Sure, Spy..." He smiled at you. "I'll be off then, good luck." "Bye." What was all that about? Now it was all clear to you he meant more than he expressed. Maybe even.. You blushed heavily and your cheeks became hot, when you felt one it was boiling. You imagined something and decided to draw it. You went to return the plate to the kitchen and left it on your desk. You had finished it but it had taken you a good two hours.

-- Downstairs --

You made your way down the stairs to put the plate back in the kitchen and a few of the other men were there. "Gut morning, fraulein." "Morning, Medic." And then Heavy spoke. "Did you sleep well _____?" "Yes I did thank you. How about you?" "I do not like morning." "Neither do I, Heavy." You said with a small chuckle. There were six missing, meaning there were four of you in the kitchen, you, Medic, Heavy and Soldier. Soldier glared at you a little and you sighed. "How about you Soldier, how was your sleep, did you sleep well?" He seemed a little surprised that you didn't say anything rude, almost like you had put everything behind you. "I am good... My sleep was good." he hesitated, taking a seat at the table. He didn't quite apologise but he seemed to respect the fact you had put everything behind you, and nodded. "Are you and Scout getting on well, or is he being an annoying maggot?" "Oh no, we're getting along fine." You noticed the Medic and Heavy smile at each other strangely before getting back to what they were doing. "Uhh, what's up with you two." "Nozhing f-" Medic begun giggling slightly and then Heavy followed. The light laughter drove you up the wall. "What?" Heavy spoke in between small chuckles. "You an-" Scout walked in and raised his eyebrow as Heavy and Medic burst out laughing. "Uhh, what's up with dem two?" "I do not know, maggot." Said Soldier firmly. "Neither to I..?" You said. Medic beckoned Soldier to come closer and he did. He whispered something to him and even Soldier begun laughing hysterically. "AHAHAH!" "You too? Oh what!?" "_____, do you have any clue hat the hell they're on about here?" "Nope." You sated before Heavy grinned. "That would be.. funny but cute." "What would???" You questioned, curiously. "Oh come on, guys!" Said Scout. "Why won't you tell us?" "IS TOO FUNNY." "Shut up, fatso, tell us!" They all just laughed again, more and more. Spy entered and they all let him in on it, 'cept he just smiled, as if he already knew what they were talking about. "REALLY? Telling everyone but us huh?" Mentioned Scout, his head tilted and you sighed. "Don't fret Scout, they'll tell us soon enough." Spy looked to Scout and had that tint in his eye, and Scout raised an eyebrow, squinting. Spy raised his eyebrows, grinning. "Wait Spy no-" "Scout, you know very well what we are discussing 'ere." "Do I? N- no.. I don't." His head made a flick towards you, Scout still hoping Spy wouldn't say anything. "Spy, tell me?" You asked. "I am sorry, it is too personal." Scout sighed in relief. "Are you kidding Spy." You looked down disappointedly. "You will find out soon enough." Said the Spy.

-- Let In --

The Spy grabbed Scout by the collar and tugged him out of the kitchen. He was having one of those talks with him again. "Scout, why don't you tell 'er?" "Uhh.. I have NO IDEA what you're talkin' about Spy." "SCOUT, you can not carry on with zhis! I know you like 'er, and the others think that you like 'er too. It's really obvious, are you that blind? Why don't you get it over and done with and ask 'er on a date already?" "Oh come on, Spy, you don't know I like her because I don't." "Mon dieu, Scout, just be a Mann, not un petite souris." "Shut up, frog." He said before angrily leaving and going back to the kitchen. "Did I scare you off?" Scouted Spy and Scout just looked like his blood was boiling. "Are you... ok Scout?" Asked you, and he looked to you for a second then just sat down and grumbled. "Spy's a bitch." Spy appeared behind him and then slapped the back of his head, you couldn't help but laugh a little as Scout flinched and went red when you laughed. "Spyyy..." You said, as if he was being immature. "Karma's the bitch." Everyone laughed, even Scout. "Whatever, frog." They smiled at each other, friends again. Sniper came in and Spy himself told Sniper what they were all laughing about. He gave that small mature chuckle before looking to you and then to Scout. "Screw you all, y'know." "I still don't know." "I hope I don't," Scout responded to you, rolling his eyes. You stretched, well anyway Sniper smiled at you friendily. "Can I talk with you a sec Sheila, about travel away from these fruit-shop owners a sec'?" "yeah, sure Sniper." You left the kitchen. "Listen, I'm not fooled and I know you're not dumb so cut the act." "Wha-?" "Shush, just answer me this honestly: Do you.. like Scout?" "Yeah I think he's a great guy to b-" "No, I mean LIKE like." "W-What why would you ask that?" "Because you blush whenever you're around him, you always get along and you like to hug him especially." The Sniper was smirking as if he'd got you exposed, you were blushing like crazy so you couldn't deny it. You were just glad he took you out of the room before explaining. "N-NO, why would you ever think of that?" "And that's what the others are laughing about." "Oh come on, that's.." "Very true mate." "..." You had nothign to defend yourself with, everything he said was true. "I saw what was on your desk, mate." You blushed even more. "Was it that obvious?" "Yes." "But he'll never like me back.. why would he like a girl like me.. I don't wear make up, and I'm not very dainty, I don't like shopping..." "Mate, that doesn't make him like you any less." "How would you know?" "Why don't you just ask him?" "I'm too worried..." "Up to you mate, let's go back." You nodded and as you walked through the door, he spoke and you thought he would tell Scout. "You're good at readin' maps." "Thanks Sniper." You said, and he nodded to know what you were REALLY thanking him for.

-- Discovery --

After the others had breakfast, the Scout left to go and get himself ready in the bedroom, not warning you though. He bumped into Spy in the hallway. "Frog?" "Scout, you-" "oh no you don't, stop buttin' into my personal life I-" "LISTEN to me Scout. You need to listen - you should tell her yourself." "She won't like me.. I'm no fancy, rich guy." "How can you tell, mon amie? That's right - you can't." The Scout stayed quiet a little. "Look on 'er desk when you go to your room. " "Spy-" "Non, look at it, just do it." "FINE, whatever." He pushed Spy out the way before going to the room. Scout, walking over to your desk sighed, until he saw your drawing. It was him and you holding hands and a heart in the middle, underneath it was a small written quote. "What I wish for doesn't matter, why would he like me?" It made him gape, grasping it and grinning."SHE DOES!" He yelled, he was happy that whole time, this caused him to be able to get dressed less normally and more hysterically hyper and happy at the same time. He took his shirt off and fist pumped. When he stopped, it was because he noticed you had opened the door on him, holding your drawing. You stared at the shirtless Scout in front of you and he stared at you, noticing you go red in the face. " I am so.. SO sorry uhhh.." You said before turning to shut the door, he extended his arm. "No wait - it's ok." He quickly said to reassure you he didn't mind your presence. You blushed even more and turned back around to him. You placed a plate on to a table next to him, you had cooked him a traditional American pile of mini pancakes stacked on top of each other with maple sauce. "I heard you liked pancakes.." You said, looking to the ground and blushing. "Pancakes." Said the Scout, smiling. "I love 'em, and with your cooking I bet they're great huh." "N-No, really." "Yeah they're great, he said biting into a bit. "In fact, they're better than any I've ever tasted." "You really think so?" "Yeah I do!" You smiled at him. He glanced at the drawing again. You widened your eyes. "Nah, it's.. uhh.. let me.." You backed up and looked scared. He had just found you LIKE liked him, and you ran down the hallway. "_____, WAIT!" He yelled but you kept on running and you saw the Sniper, you ran into his arms and wept. "SNIPER HE KNOWS." "Are you ok mate? What happened? Was 'e mean to ya?" You hugged you, but not like Scout did this morning, more of a friendly way. "He saw the DRAWING!" "Ohh.." Sniper paused "What did you say?" "I..He thanked me for the pancakes. Then he looked at the drawing and stopped smiling... I ran over here and he shouted wait or something... but I was too scared... What do I do, Sniper, whaddo I do............." You spoke quickly, Sniper kept hugging you. "Mate, you gotta make sure he doesn't like you, because if 'e shouted for you to wait maybe he wanted to tell you something." "No, he wouldn't..." You admitted and sniffed. "You don't know, mate. You don't know." Sniper lead you into the kitchen and the other seven mercenaries were there. When they saw you were crying, and everyone was there bar Scout, some of them went angry. Heavy yelled. "WHAT DID SCOUT DO TO _____, DID SCOUT HURT YOU?" Medic went over to comfort you, and the look on Spy's face was sympathetic, he didn't know what went wrong. Soldier narrowed his eyes. "What did that maggot do to you?" Engie and Demo looked to you and went and comforted you, Pyro held an axe. Sniper looked to Heavy and then Soldier, and then Pyro." "NO." "No don't hurt him.." Soldier, Pyro and Heavy seemed to just walk out, obviously going to see Scout, oh no...
